About Dan

A 46-year veteran in his practice of architecture, being a Registered Architect for 22 of those years, he started at the age of 17 and served an apprenticeship to eventually becoming a Registered Architect. His cross-training in the engineering disciplines has truly made him an architectural engineer, and a specialist in regulatory, building code, professional practice, etc. He has been ICC-certified as a Commercial Plan Reviewer and ADA Plan Reviewer/Inspector. He currently serves on the Enforcement Advisory Committee for the Arizona Board of Technical Registration for over 21 years. He also held a license as a contractor in Arizona, a Commissioner for the Phoenix Mayor’s Commission on Disabilities Issues (MCDI), and a Vice-Chair of the (MCDI) Architectural, Accessibility, and Design Committee. He has been a mentor and teacher all his career in technical colleges, community colleges, and now university. After 33 years in private practice, he moved to the public sector, where he spent 8 years as the Staff Architect for the Arizona School Facilities Board (SFB) before moving to serve as a Senior Architect in the Office of the University Architect at Arizona State University (ASU), and also serves on the faculty at Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts (the Design School) at ASU where he primarily teaches facilities management, building codes, and interior design studios. He completed his undergraduate degree and MBA in 33 months while working full-time at the SFB, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and had a 3.93 GPA in his MBA program. He is a forensic investigator and writer. His first book, The Complete Facilities Manager, was published in 2023. He has a teaching style that makes everything very easy to understand by using the concept of building blocks (Legos) and uses stories to help convey memorable learning objectives. His style has always been engaging with students and transcends his writing style.
  • Every so often a significant book is available for facilities officers that requires significant recognition. Such is the case with The Complete Facilities Manager, in which an actual practitioner provides insights into the profession and what he perceives as important.
